PHILANTHROPY & FUNDRAISING

Our responsibility as the women of Theta Phi Alpha is to care for and to make a commitment to those who are less fortunate than ourselves. As such, the sisters of the Beta Alpha chapter love to give back to our community, in as many ways as we possibly can! We get involved in a variety of different philanthropic causes, while always remaining devoted to helping the Theta Phi Alpha Foundation. Our national foundation essentially supports two national philanthropic causes: The House That Theta Phi Alpha Built, & Glenmary Home Missioners. These philanthropies consist of programs aimed at helping families and children in extremely impoverished areas of the United States. The programs also raise money to aid the sick, and provide food for the hungry.

Our chapter loves to make philanthropy events enjoyable for everyone. Theta Phi Alpha sisters make a point to always do community service together in a large group, making each moment a memorable bonding experience! We often host philanthropy events that are aimed at raising money for a particular charity or cause that is close to a sister's heart. For example, in the past our chapter has particpated in the Take Steps to Find a Cure Walk, for Crohns and Colitis, and we have worked to spread cancer-awareness through our "Cancer Is A Word, Not A Sentence" campaign.

Within the past few years, we've had the pleasure of starting new philanthropy and fundraising traditions! We have proudly hosted our "Theta Thrift Shop" for three semesters now, and we were so excited to call the event a massive success! All of the proceeds from this event were donated to L.I. Against Domestic Violence! Sisters also focused their efforts on collecting donations and raising awareness for the Mercy Center Ministries, a women's shelter near Stony Brook campus. We were so humbled by the generous donation we were able to give in support of women in need. On a smaller scale, sisters have participated in campus sponsored events, such as Stony Brook's Week of Service. During this week we took a stand against domestic violence and sexual assault, in the "Walk In Their Shoes" march, and helped "Brighten the Brook" through the Campus Beautification Project.  Theta Phi Alpha was also able to raise over a thousand dollars in support of "Relay for Life" on Stony Brook campus!

Sisters also enjoy holding philanthropic events that allow everyone on campus to get involved. For example, for the past five years the Beta Alpha chapter has hosted  "The Mangeant" - a pageant in which men of different on-campus organizations (whether it be a Greek organization, sports team, or band) come together to compete for the title of our "Theta Phi Guy". Proceeds that are earned from the pageant go towards a new local charity that our chapter chooses each year. In the warmer months, the Theta Phi girls also love to put on our "Pie A Theta Phi" event right in our very own academic mall, where sisters volunteer themselves to be pied in the face for charity! All year long, we host bake sales in the SAC lobby, where we sell fresh homemade sweets and treats.

Overall our sisters hope to achieve the mission of our founders, and ensure that our presence in greek life is one that will have a lasting impact on our community.
