Frequently Asked QUestions

1. What are the benefits of joining a sorority?

Entering such a large school can be extremely overwhelming for any student. It's very easy to feel lost in the crowd, and feel without a place. Being in a sorority helps to make our huge campus feel a lot smaller, and allows for meaningful friendships to be made. Being in a sorority does not just give you letters to wear on a shirt - it provides a gateway to an entirely independent community of people of all different organizations. Many clubs and organizations offer things such as academic support, leadership skills, and social activities. However, only a sorority can provide all of these things, as well as a family to call your own on campus. Becoming a sister of a National Sorority allows you to be a part of something greater than yourself. Theta Phi Alpha has over one hundred chapters across the United States alone, and as a sister you are given the greatest privelage of being able to network with wonderful people who share a common bond, vision, and value.

2. What does being in a sorority entail?

Sisterhood is about always being there for each other, making memories together, and most importantly, leaning on each other for support. There is no friendship like the one you will share with your sisters. That being said, being in a sorority is a big time commitment. We have weekly chapter meetings that each sister must attend, and Exexcutive Board positions will often attend annual Theta Phi Alpha Conferences and Conventions around the United States! A huge part of being in a sorority is also hosting a lot of philanthropy events! It’s all about giving back and being a part of the campus community. Our sisters participate in everything from Greek Week to Homecoming celebrations. We are very involved on campus and collaborate with various fraternities, sororities and organizations throughout the school year. We also hold sisterhood activities, where we do things such as pumpkin picking or movie nights, and you can always find a group of sisters together on Staller when the weather is warm. Ultimately, being in our sorority gives us a sense of belonging to a family.

3. What is Recruitment like?

Recruitment, formerly known as "Rush", is the term for the first few weeks of school when new freshmen and non Greek life affiliated students attend events to get to know the sororities and fraternities on campus, and consider becoming a member. This is a perfect time for potential new members and sisters to meet and get to know one another. The recruitment process lasts as long as you would like it to. We urge interested individuals to get to know us as well as possible, because we want to make sure that you find the right fit in Theta Phi Alpha! The recruitment period comes to a close when each of the three National Panhellenic Sororities extend bids to potential new members that they would like to call their sister.

4. How do I get a bid?

A bid is essentially an invitation to join our organization. In order to be eligible to receive a bid, you must either attend Continuous Open Bidding or Formal Recruitment. If you do receive a bid, you will be contacted either on the last night of Formal Recruitment, or a few days after your C.O.B. Interview!

5. What is Continuous Open Bidding?

Continuous Open Bidding (also known as C.O.B.), is normally done in the Fall semesters. It is a brief, formal interview, which lasts around 10 minutes. It simply is a way for our sisters to get to know you better!

6. What is Formal Recruitment?

Formal Recruitment is a 3-5 day process that all girls on campus are invited to. At Formal Recruitment, you meet all three National sororities, in order to decide where you will fit best as a sister. As Formal Recruitment progresses, potential new members and sororities list their choices in order of preference. Desirable potential new members will receive an invitation to attend Preference Night, the last night of Formal Recruitment. If you are unsure which sorority is for you, then we would suggest attending Formal Recruitment!
